Battle of the Fans: Meet California Wives

This month we’re rocking out with a new theme called ‘Rock On’ and a ‘Battle of the Fans’ video contest. We’ve invited 11 Sonicbids bands to have their music included in our ‘Rock On’ theme and battle it out for the opportunity to play at SXSW. In this series of blog posts we meet the bands. Click here for more profiles.

California WivesJoe O’Conner, the drummer for Chicago band California Wives, tells us, “we are neither married nor women. We didn’t mean to be confusing, we just liked the name.”

The band consists of Joe, Jayson Kramer on vocals and guitar, and Graham Masell on lead guitar. Joe explains, “Jayson and I are originally from the Chicago Metro area and met through college friends. We bonded over the music we were really into at the time – lots of New Wave and Shoegaze – and started playing music together.”

Joe says, “inspirations are a tough thing to nail down. So much out there is inspiring and sometimes the best ideas come from music that sounds nothing like your own. That said, we’ve listened to a lot of the Police, New Order, Stone Roses and Blur.”

You’ll find their song “Purple” in our ‘Rock On’ editing style. Joe tells us, “Little known fact: “Purple is @John Ramsaur’s favorite song. True story.
